SHADOWS
KARO, ARBORE, HAMER AND TSEMAY
Built by the Karo on pillars, the long-term structure serves as a shady meeting place and will be extended over the years with segments representing the next generation of initiates. The structure, which is located in the south-west of Ethiopia, stands out from the architecture of the area, which is dominated by smaller buildings, due to its size and nature. The shady roofs of the Hamer, which serve as meeting places, complement the huts in the families‘ living quarters. The Arbore, on the other hand, build separate rooms with narrow entrances attached to their huts, thus creating a dark space outside the sleeping area that is protected from the heat. In the savannah, the Hamer build field structures to provide shade when they are out walking or working in the fields.
