KONSO AND ALE
The system of terraces with which the Konso cover the hills of their territory is alive, it is worked and changed by the Konso. The Konso area is a historic cultural landscape that is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Konso’s terraces and structures date back a long way, but they are still in use in this densely populated area. The Konso build with field stones held together only by the forces of nature. The walled, castle-like villages with traditional round huts are still inhabited. They exist alongside houses covered with corrugated iron, and around the small town of Konso, which has modern houses and the typical infrastructure of a town in southern Ethiopia. In the outskirts of the Konso territory, traditional round huts predominate. The initial association of the area with a museum-like character gradually disappears during a longer stay.
