PERMANENCE
TOUBOU AND ARAB NOMADS
The isolated way of life of the Toubou in the Sahara in the north of Chad is reflected in the closed tent and fence constructions that prevent strangers from looking into the intimate living area. The tents of the Arab nomads, on the other hand, are more open and adapted to a life that includes the outdoors. When they move, their possessions – such as their eating utensils – are visibly attached to the frames. The shapes of the tents are characterised by tradition, neighbourly proximity, weather and fashion. Stone burial sites form a contrast to the mobile dwellings of the living.
