BOTH BANKS
TURKANA, SAMBURU, EL MOLO AND POKOT
The Turkana people live in northern Kenya on both sides of Lake Turkana, which is difficult for them to cross. Different construction methods and styles have therefore developed on the west and east sides of the lake. What these stable constructions have in common is that they protect the people during sandstorms.
The architectural structures of the Turkana on the eastern shore of the Lake are dominated by the igloo shape, the hemisphere. The huts are functionally designed from wooden branches. They are not very large and the entrances are narrow. The Turkana use plastic and paper to seal against sand and dust. The unadorned structures are consistently adapted to the harsh environmental conditions.
