TURKANA AND POKOT
On the western side of Lake Turkana, a Turkana construction method using plaited reeds dominates. The material makes it possible to give the huts and granaries on stilts a vertical segmentation that has a strong aesthetic effect and conciseness. The reed as a valuable building material is traded in the region and exchanged for livestock, for example. Huts and granaries are surrounded by wooden, semi-circular structures that serve as windbreaks. Industrial materials are rarely used in the region for hut construction. Traditional construction methods dominate.
