LOTUKO AND LARIM

When the British photographer George Rodger took his pictures of the Lotuko in the south of Sudan, now South Sudan, in 1949, the people still lived in the Kitepo valley at the foot of the Imatong Mountains. In the meantime, they have moved to build their villages above the valley on the mountain slopes – with terrace systems and footpaths secured by rocks. This change of location was for better defence after attacks on the villages during the civil war with northern Sudan, including air raids in the 1990s. However, the Lotuko have retained the same construction method for their houses.
