REPAIR
NUBIEN
The Nubian mud houses along the Nile are mostly courtyard buildings in which families of several generations live together. They are surrounded by walls with individually designed entrances. The construction method with sun-dried and baked mud bricks protects the inhabitants from the heat. The buildings have to be repaired and plastered every other year to prevent them from falling into disrepair. For a few years now, this region, which previously had no rainfall for years, has been experiencing repeated short, heavy downpours that destroy the roofs of the houses. Climate change is forcing the inhabitants of Nubia to adapt their construction methods and use concrete instead of clay for the roofs.
