HADJARAY AND KANEMBOU

The people who live in the Sahel region of Chad build their houses from clay and plant materials, sometimes combining the two materials to create a building complex. The Kanembou in the west of the country dry the locally produced clay bricks in the sun in front of the buildings. They extend the finished dwellings with extensions made from grasses. The Hadjaray in the east of the country use clay and plant materials to build round huts. Containers made of raw clay are used to store food. They stand in front of the huts and characterize the view of the settlement, as they are visible from afar due to their height of up to two meters.
